About Me

On here I have written a little bit about me including what my background and interests are, I know it may be stuff that not everyone is interested in but I like to give people the option of knowing who I am. So read on if you feel like it.

Background

Go to my blogI am a Web Developer based in Melbourne, Australia. I am originally from Scotland having been born and bred a proud Scot.

Before arriving in Australia two years ago, I had worked for 6 years in Financial Services, which was a great experience that allowed me to learn, amongst many other things, how not to launder money and how a balanced portfolio really is the way to make money. However, it was never really the industry I felt could fulfil my ambitions in and I sought a new challenge. I always had an interest in technology, it seemed a world of possibility to me, so I cranked up the sails and changed direction for a career in IT. In a more literal sense I moved to Melbourne, met the love of my life Jo and completed a Master of IT degree, and the rest as they say is history.

I have fallen for Melbourne, which I think is a great place to live. There is so much to do, a great climate, fantastic food and plenty of opportunities. Throw in a big helping of diversity, multiculturalism and a cosmopolitan-feel and it’s a diamond place to be. Of course it has its problems, the transport system is nearing capacity, violence is on the increase and the drought is pretty fierce, but they are problems which can be tackled by competent federal and local governments, should they ever be elected.

I know Jo at this point will be prompting me to mention her as the biggest advantage of living here, well I’m on it honey, after all I can’t deny it. And I wouldn’t want to. She’s a wee cracker and I’m a lucky guy.

Interests

Music, Food (cooking and eating), Football, Travelling and the Web pretty much sums it up for me. I also like partaking in a bit of linguistic scholarship, I studied German during my bachelors and lived in Germany for a year and I also can speak competent Spanish if I’ve had enough Rioja. There’s another thing I should add, I do like a good drop of wine and living here gives one the opportunity to sample some of the best local wines in the world. In saying that, I should point out I’m no expert, but I think I know a $50 bottle from a cleanskin.

I’ve been lucky enough to see a bit of Europe and Australia over the years, and any opportunity that comes up for a bit of travel, I’m always keen. I think South America is somewhere I’d like to go soon, test the Spanish and dabble in some Portuguese maybe.

Football is my number one sporting passion, there is no better game in my opinion. I am talking about the game you play with your feet by the way, not with your hands, just to save any confusion… I’ve been restricted to watching it in the past couple of years due to a knee injury but I plan to play again soon and dazzle this antipodal nation with my skills.

I also like the Aussie version, and Jo has converted me into a Collingwood fan, having arrived a Geelong Cat for some reason. I’ve been to a few games and I have to say I really like the sport, as odd as it is to a newbie.
